Do I need a consultation with a divorce lawyer?

February 12, 2015 by Brian Moore 4 Comments

If you are asking yourself “Do I need a consultation with a divorce lawyer?” the answer is most likely “Yes.”

To begin with, if you are asking the question then you have either made the decision to get a divorce or your spouse has informed you that he or she wants a divorce.

Obtaining a consultation with a family law or divorce attorney is the first thing any person should do after deciding to end a marriage or after being told that their spouse desires a divorce. Only a competent divorce lawyer may explain your rights, educate you on the process of divorce, and answer your questions. You will also be given advice as how best to proceed in your particular case.  It is essential that you obtain legal advice as soon as possible in order to preserve your options.

Divorce is likely to be the most emotional experiences in your life. The right divorce lawyer will help you understand what is happening and what to expect. He or she will help you get on the right path early by explaining the attorney’s role as well as your responsibilities during the divorce process. An experienced divorce lawyer will also help you to understand your divorce in the context of the most up-to-date laws and the status of your local courts. This is especially important with regard to such areas as alimony, custody, child support, division of retirement accounts, etc..

An experienced divorce lawyer will talk to you about the options for legal representation, whether you may or may not need a lawyer, and the costs associated with each option.

During my initial consultations with potential clients I take the time to obtain a thorough history of the marriage before explaining rights, responsibilities, legal options and how the process works. The more information you bring to a consultation the more detailed and thorough the advice will be.

If you are considering divorce or facing divorce please contact an experienced divorce lawyer in order to educate and protect yourself.

You stated that obtaining a consultation with a family law or divorce attorney is the first thing any person should do after deciding to end a marriage or after being told that their spouse desires a divorce. My cousin and his wife has been having a lot of financial difficulties and have decided that they no longer want to be together. Do most law firms offer free consultations? Finding a reputable attorney to help him might be the best.

I like the idea to speak with a divorce lawyer in order to get an idea of what to expect. My brother and his wife have had some serious disputes recently. I definitely think that they need to speak with a divorce lawyer about their options.

My friend has been having some issues in his marriage. It makes sense that he could benefit from a family lawyer! It’s not good to be in a marriage that is getting worse.
